Carolina Panthers could trade for Baker Mayfield
Even though there was reportedly “mutual disinterest” between the Carolina Panthers and Baker Mayfield, the last few days have seen some real momentum build regarding a potential trade.
The troubled quarterback is surplus to requirements after the Cleveland Browns secured Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans. If the former No. 1 overall selection is still around by the time training camp begins, it’s going to cause an unnecessary distraction at a vital time.
Mayfield has clearly moved on mentally from the organization. There were moments when the Oklahoma product certainly looked like a franchise player, but concerns about his maturity and ability to become a true leader within the locker room were just two areas that led the Browns to go in a different direction.
Cleveland has almost no leverage where this situation is concerned. The Panthers could get Mayfield for a low-end pick and potentially even get the Browns to take on some of his $18.85 million to get him off their hands.
Mayfield represents an upgrade on Sam Darnold from a production standpoint. But judging by the comments on social media about the possibility by wide receiver Robby Anderson, the trade might not be that well received.
