This is somewhat of a barren center class. Many top prospects decided to return to college, leaving a gap between the obvious best in Tyler Linderbaum and the next group.
One of those in the conversation is Cam Jurgens. The Nebraska product has similar measurements to Linderbaum in terms of height and weight, making him slightly on the smaller side. However, he makes up for this with very impressive athleticism and has the ability to explode out of his stance with violence and quickness to get to the next level with ease.
With his athleticism, Jurgens unsurprisingly has excellent lateral quickness getting out into the open field in search of work. He’s a physical blocker, using his tenacity to make sure he finishes the block overpowering defenders – although this sometimes leads to a little recklessness.
Due to his smaller size, he can sometimes be susceptible to being driven back by a larger stronger lineman. Jurgens also needs improvement in picking up blitzes and sometimes leaves gaps open for pass rushers to shoot.
Jurgens has shown he has the ability to add weight. Something he may need to do to be a success at the next level.
With the Carolina Panthers’ next pick after No. 6 being No. 137, if they select a premier left tackle don’t be surprised if they still go after someone like Jurgens in later rounds if he’s still available.
