A three-year starter at Northern Iowa, Trevor Penning has continued to impress NFL teams and should be a sure-fire first-round pick.
It’s uncertain where exactly Penning will go in the first round. But it can be anywhere from the top 10 to the bottom of the first round – which is another indicator of just how unpredictable this draft is at the top end.
The most impressive part of Penning’s game is his strength and run-blocking ability. He had an unprecedented 99.9 run-blocking grade last season as a starting left tackle and continues to put on more weight, which should help him in the pros.
His strong grade was against FCS competition, mainly. However, Penning has quick feet and mauled almost everyone he came up against at the college level.
One of the concerns about Penning is adjustments and control with his hands. He is tough, and that is something the Carolina Panthers could desperately use on their offensive line.
As we know, Panthers head coach Matt Rhule can be very picky about offensive linemen’s measurables, which might hurt Penning’s chances of being drafted by Carolina.
Penning did impress a lot at this year’s Senior Bowl, even if his methods didn’t exactly please all that many. If the prospect slides, Carolina has the option to take him later than the top-10 with a trade.
