Shi Smith – Carolina Panthers WR/KR

It was disappointing to see Shi Smith’s lack of involvement for the Carolina Panthers during his rookie season. The 2021 sixth-round pick was seen as a potentially game-changing wide receiver who could also make a difference in the return game, which didn’t pan out despite the lack of productivity from other pass-catchers outside of D.J. Moore.

Although it’s way too soon to be giving up on Smith just yet, that won’t stop the Panthers from drafting a gifted wideout from another strong class if they feel it can benefit the franchise. Something that the South Carolina product will no doubt be keeping a close eye on.

The return game is somewhere that Smith could have an opportunity after the Panthers didn’t bring back Alex Erickson. But again, this all depends on whether Carolina strengthens their options in this regard in college.

There is also the small matter of Smith’s offseason arrest to consider. Not exactly ideal for a player still looking to make his way at the next level.

Another wideout or returner would be laying a big-time gauntlet down to Smith. How he responds to what’s going to be a substantial challenge will go a long way to determining his future in Carolina.
