Matt Corral must improve the fundamentals
The Carolina Panthers have not had the best history in recent years in terms of consistent fundamentals from the quarterback position. Especially last season with Sam Darnold under center.
Matt Corral offers quality tools and traits to become a future starter in the NFL. The Panthers’ third-round selection has good arm talent and flashes of consistent accuracy on all three levels of the field.
He also displays a nasty quick release and plenty of athleticism to create plays with his legs when things aren’t developing as expected. However, Corral enters the league with plenty to be concerned about, as he is as raw as they come.
The former 4-star recruit from Long Beach, California came from an Ole Miss offense that included a heavy dose of run-pass options and simple one to two read progressions, rarely showing the ability to read the entire field and process different levels quickly.
Other concerns with Corral include putting the ball in harm’s way far too often, inconsistent decision-making and deep ball accuracy, and working from within a crowded pocket.
With how raw he is as a quarterback, one of the key goals for Corral this season should be to improve his fundamentals such as lower half mechanics, field vision, decision-making, and learning an NFL playbook that involves understanding the different responsibilities and roles each player on offense has.
This is not an easy task for a rookie quarterback, especially one coming out of a very quarterback-friendly offense at Ole Miss. But the more reps Corral can do and take in, the easier the transition from college to the NFL will be for No. 9.
