Carolina Panthers would be gambling on another aging veteran

If this was the Dee Ford that tore up the league in 2018, it would not be a discussion and the San Francisco 49ers might even keep him around in this scenario. However, recent events have caused a shift in dynamic.

The Carolina Panthers could find themselves with a shot at landing the player if they feel it can benefit them during a critical third year for Matt Rhule. But this represents another major gamble on an aging veteran that may or may not work out.

This is something the Panthers have done plenty under the current regime with mixed success. Ford should be fit and ready to go after featuring just once in 2020 and providing the targets are modest, this could be a great bit of business when it’s all said and done.

If it doesn’t work out, then it’s yet another swing and a miss by the Panthers. One that could end up putting a dent in their hopes of genuine progress.

Carolina might need to act fast if they identify Ford as someone who could be of use. The Panthers are unlikely to be alone once the edge defender hits free agency, so striking with conviction and continuing the good work this offseason would be highly advantageous.

Ford’s career is seemingly hanging in the balance. If the Panthers did sign him, then it could be the spark he needs to end his time in the league on a high and help the team along the way.
