Carolina Panthers select Trenton Simpson

  • Linebacker | Clemson

The streak is over.

It’s well documented that the Carolina Panthers have never selected a prospect from Clemson throughout franchise history. Something that could change in 2023 given the caliber of players set to come out from the Tigers next year.

Losing Luke Kuechly to a shock retirement is something Carolina is still reeling from. They are on their third middle linebacker starter in as many seasons without the perennial All-Pro and those in power would be wise to get themselves a long-term option sooner rather than later.

If Baker Mayfield proves to be the right guy at quarterback, then the Panthers can focus their attention on finding solutions to other ongoing complications. Trenton Simpson ticks all the boxes and has all the traits one looks for in a prolific NFL linebacker.

Simpson was nothing short of phenomenal for Clemson last season, racking up 65 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and 12.5 tackles for loss. His size makes him a significant asset in the run game and he is also dependable when it comes to generating pressure in obvious situations.

Providing that Simpson bulks up a little upon arriving in the pros, then someone is going to have a real player on their hands.
