Carolina Panthers did not overpay for Baker Mayfield

After striking out on ambitious trades for Russell Wilson and Deshaun Watson, the Carolina Panthers were facing the prospect of overpaying for another veteran with a point to prove. Something that’s been evident throughout Matt Rhule‘s time as head coach so far.

Signing Teddy Bridgewater and trading for Sam Darnold didn’t come off as the Panthers hoped. Although they moved up to secure Matt Corral at No. 94 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, it did not stop them from coveting Baker Mayfield and after months of intense negotiations, a compromise was finally reached with the Cleveland Browns last week.

Mayfield is a polarizing figure coming off a season of regression. But much of that was down to a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder and the Panthers actually got themselves a good deal looking at the potential cost and finances involved.

Carolina will likely give up a 2024 fourth-round pick if Mayfield turns out in 70 percent of the snaps. It’s also costing them $5 million guaranteed that could rise to $8.5 million if the Oklahoma product meets certain targets.

If it doesn’t work out, then the Panthers can move on without any cap implications moving forward. Hopefully, this additional time for Corral to develop will see him ready to start by the 2023 campaign.

Considering the previous errors in Carolina’s judgment under center, it was a refreshing change. Whether it comes with improved results is another matter.
