4 young Carolina Panthers who could surprise in 2022 training camp

Matt Corral – Carolina Panthers QB
The Carolina Panthers are still working out the finer points of Matt Corral‘s rookie deal, which has yet to be signed by the third-round pick. Although there are some on social media speculating this has something to do with Baker Mayfield’s arrival, the more likely scenario is the guaranteed money and the overall structure.
Corral will show up for training camp with a contract or not. The Ole Miss product can ill afford a slow start and wants to impose himself on a reported quarterback competition that also includes Mayfield, Sam Darnold, and P.J. Walker.
Nobody is expecting Corral to unseat Mayfield from the No. 1 spot. However, if certain areas of his game come on in the next few weeks, then the Panthers might just place him as their primary backup and examine ways to get Darnold out of the equation.
Based on production alone, Corral was far superior to any prospect coming out of college this spring. His decision-making and size put off some teams, with many also biding their time before looking into an exceptional 2023 draft class.
Confidence is key for Corral in this scenario. The Panthers still see him as their long-term option under center, so getting better gradually before potentially taking over the reins once the upcoming campaign comes to a conclusion is the top priority right now.
