Derek Wright – Carolina Panthers WR

Getting noticed within the wide receiver room is a monumental ask for any new recruit looking to establish themselves. The Carolina Panthers are loaded with exciting talent at the position, with the addition of quarterback Baker Mayfield bringing out the best in many during the team’s recent training camp.

Adding Rashard Higgins – who shone in a big way at Wofford College – only increases hopes that this group can become a leading force and propel the Panthers to bigger things next time around. Assuming four or five positions are already secured, it’s now a frantic race for others to catch the eye when targets come their way in preseason games.

One player that’s come from nowhere this offseason is Derek Wright.

Another undrafted free-agent signing by the Panthers, his elusiveness and ability to go deep have seen his chances of sticking around in some capacity increase. An unfortunate injury to C.J. Saunders that will sideline him for the warmup fixtures opens the door slightly wider.

Wright came up with an outstanding catch from a Matt Corral deep ball towards the end of camp. But his dependable hands and smooth route-running are traits that haven’t gone unnoticed over a busy three weeks.

It’s still a long shot. But stranger things have happened and Wright goes into the preseason with plenty of confidence.
