After months of little activity, the Carolina Panthers finally take to the field for their first preseason encounter at the Washington Commanders on Saturday.

The long wait is over. Carolina Panthers football is back today when Matt Rhule’s men take on the Washington Commanders in their first preseason contest.

This is the latest important step in preparations for the upcoming campaign. The Panthers made strong moves during the offseason and recently concluded their annual training camp at Wofford College, which was intense and far more structured than at any point during Rhule’s tenure so far.

There are still some questions that need to be solved. And we’ll find out more following the Panthers’ game at the Commanders, where they are going up against former head coach Ron Rivera.

Carolina’s starters will be involved a little during the warmup fixture according to Matt Rhule. But risking the health of individuals such as Christian McCaffrey and Jaycee Horn wouldn’t be wise with the regular season so close.

Excitement is growing rapidly and renewed vigor has been evident across the roster and fanbase as the summer’s gone on. Whether this translates into better fortunes in 2022 is another matter entirely.

Carolina Panthers at Washington Commanders’ odds for Preseason Week 1

According to the latest odds from WynnBET, the Panthers are 3.0-point underdogs for their clash at FedEx Field at -110 (bet $110 to win $100). Carolina is +135 on the money line (bet $100 to win $135), with the Commanders favored at -145 (bet $145 to win $100).

WynnBET does not expect this one to be a high-scoring affair, with the over/under set at 37.0 points and can be wagered at -110 in both directions.

Carolina Panthers Injury Report at Washington Commanders for Preseason Week 1

The Panthers have a couple of injury worries heading into their opening preseason game. Ian Thomas and C.J. Saunders have been ruled out with long-term injuries, with Jaycee Horn also not playing as the former first-round pick works his way back from a broken foot suffered in Week 3 at the Houston Texans.

Carolina Panthers at Washington Commanders Prediction for Preseason Week 1

It’s hard to predict preseason games. Carolina’s starters aren’t expected to play anything more than a series or two, so the result will ultimately depend on how the rest perform with roster spots up for grabs.

Washington is in the same boat, too. They’d probably like to get some reps into new quarterback Carson Wentz, even if it’s unlikely to be for a full game.

Any momentum the Panthers can generate will be a bonus ahead of next week’s joint practices with the New England Patriots. With this in mind, betting over 37.0 points and not the result could be the best way to make some money.

Carolina Panthers’ next game and schedule

The Panthers embark on their second preseason game next Friday when they visit the New England Patriots (7 p.m. ET). This will come after some testing practices between the two teams throughout the week.

Carolina concludes its preseason schedule at home to the Buffalo Bills on August 26.
