Ikem Ekwonu – Carolina Panthers OT

After the Carolina Panthers selected Ikem Ekwonu at No. 6 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, many fans were hoping he would instantly slot into the left tackle position with a view to assuming the spot long-term. However, the coaching staff took things slow with the first-rounder, making him earn his way to No. 1 throughout training camp.

Although this was frustrating to many given the dire need for continuity on Carolina’s protection, it was a challenge Ekwonu embraced. His attitude was first-class despite Brady Christensen securing the majority of first-team snaps, which allowed the North Carolina State product to improve specific areas of his game under the guidance of experienced coach James Campen.

It’s been a gradual process for Ekwonu. But the Panthers saw enough to announce him as their starting left tackle following their first joint practice with the New England Patriots.

Ekwonu faces a baptism of fire that will come with times of trouble. But the player’s mentality and overall ability indicate this could finally be Carolina’s long-term successor to Jordan Gross after almost a decade.

The Panthers struck it lucky when the top prospect on their board was available. Ekwonu is a tone setter and a difference maker all in one, which could bring about a significant upturn in production at one of the most important positions on offense.
