In their 28 years of existence, the Carolina Panthers have had their fair share of future Hall of Honor or Pro Football Hall of Fame talent on both offense and defense. The tight end position is no exception.
Wesley Walls was the first great tight end in the franchise’s history, showing consistent production in his seven years with the Panthers. During his nine years in Carolina, Greg Olsen became arguably one of the greatest players in team history before he was released in 2020 free agency.
However, since the Panthers cut ties with Olsen in the 2020 offseason, the organization has lacked stability at tight end. As it currently stands, the top two on the Panthers roster are Ian Thomas, a fifth-year player out of Indiana, and Tommy Tremble, a promising second-year option with a high ceiling.
So far this preseason, both players haven’t impressed to the point where either has gained separation as the top tight end on the roster. Yet, there is hope that both Thomas and Tremble can produce in an area on offense that has lacked that very thing over the last couple of years.
Ben McAdoo has a history of getting production out of his tight ends. During his time with the New York Giants as both offensive coordinator and head coach, players such as Larry Donnell, Will Tye, and Evan Engram all enjoyed some of their most productive seasons under Carolina’s new play-caller.
As of right now, things are up in the air at a position that held stability for nearly a decade.
Can either Thomas or Tremble become the answer to being the security blanket for Baker Mayfield? Only time will tell. With questions surrounding the position, the Panthers should begin to monitor the potential tight end prospects for the 2023 NFL Draft.
