Carolina Panthers select Luke Wypler

  • Center | Ohio State

Much has been made about the improvements across the offensive line this season. The Carolina Panthers invested wisely and introduced Brady Christensen into the lineup, which was further boosted by the appointment of one of the best coaches in the business, James Campen.

It’s always worth improving depth through the college ranks in case the worst happens with injury. Although the Panthers have been pretty fortunate on the health front outside of a long-term injury to center Pat Elflein.

Bradley Bozeman’s immediate impact could lead to an extension, which nobody would complain about. But with Elflein looking like a prime salary-cap sacrifice, finding an understudy would be beneficial.

Someone like Luke Wypler fills this need and then some. He might not be the most physically-imposing offensive lineman, but his hand placement and athleticism make him an intriguing development project that could eventually fill a starting role.

Wypler’s communication pre-snap working in tandem with quarterback C.J. Stroud is exemplary. There is also a great deal to like about his technique, footwork, and agility on the line and at the second level.

There is still a rawness in pass protection. But if Wypler ended up in Carolina and Campen is retained under a new staff, then these complications should be rectified quickly.
