Will the Carolina Panthers hire Steve Wilks?

When are we going to hire Steve Wilks? – RaMoon

RaMoon, I wish it were that simple. If it weren’t for the Rooney Rule, owner David Tepper would’ve already made the move to make Steve Wilks the permanent head coach of the franchise.

In Monday’s critical observations article, I discussed how Wilks has made his case to be this team’s headman going forward through the next couple of seasons. He certainly deserves it considering where the Carolina Panthers were during Matt Rhule’s tenure and the lack of leadership that was seen from the exterior and interior of the organization.

However, I wouldn’t get my hopes up on Wilks getting the job. Per the Rooney Rule, Carolina must interview two external minority candidates for the head coaching position.

Tepper and general manager Scott Fitterer will certainly consider Wilks and will likely interview him as they begin the process. Though, I could see them potentially looking to interview San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans and Pittsburgh Steelers linebackers coach Brian Flores for the gig.

Another name to consider is former Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich. He’s a great offensive mind who can establish a good culture and environment within the franchise.

The Panthers are at the point of “hurry up and wait,” as they will have to be patient for another two weeks before they can begin the interviewing process. Whatever happens, let’s hope Wilks is still on the coaching staff whether as the guy or as a defensive assistant.
