D.J. Moore’s lackluster season

Why do we struggle to get the ball to D.J. Moore? – Tim

Tim, it has been quite frustrating as a football fan and analyst to see D.J. Moore struggle to acquire targets throughout the season. It’s likely that his 1,000-yards-per-year streak will come to an end unless he goes ballistic during the final four games.

Moore is a very talented receiver and when given the opportunity can dominate a game with the ball in his hands. He has top-10 wideout potential but has not had the structure to reach these heights in 2022.

The former Maryland star’s lack of production can be for a couple of reasons. The first is the lack of continuity at quarterback.

The Carolina Panthers have started Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, and P.J. Walker throughout the campaign. All three have been unable to get him the ball either because they missed him in their reads, Moore was double-teamed or the throws were inaccurate and uncatchable.

Another reason is the lack of effort to gameplan around Moore. Offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo has done a poor job of scheming for his star offensive player. As the top playmaker on that side of the line of scrimmage, it is important to get the ball to your best player in order for the offense to have better success.

It’s been a season to forget for Moore. With a new quarterback and offensive coordinator at hand next season, it should be expected that the talented receiver will see an increase in production and, hopefully, a career year.
