Carolina Panthers vs. Lions early odds and prediction for Week 16
By Dean Jones
It’s do-or-die for the Carolina Panthers as they conclude their home engagements in 2022 against the red-hot Detroit Lions in Week 16.
After a demoralizing loss with the NFC South summit in sight versus the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Carolina Panthers face another daunting test of character during their home finale against the Detroit Lions this weekend.
This was seen as one of the more winnable games on the schedule prior to the campaign. But head coach Dan Campbell’s men are in exceptional form and will be fighting hard to enhance an ever-growing belief they can reach the postseason.
Steve Wilks is refusing to entertain thoughts of playoff football after what transpired in Week 15. Carolina was embarrassed in the trenches and got a taste of their own medicine from Mike Tomlin, who had his team ready for war en route to commanding proceedings for the contest’s duration.
The Panthers won’t want to send their fans home on Christmas Eve unhappy. In order to accomplish this feat, far better execution is required and Wilks must also adjust his game plan to counteract what appears to be a real threat Detroit has at its disposal.
Whether Carolina is capable of doing this is another matter.

Carolina Panthers vs. Lions prediction for Week 16
As stated previously, most fans would have chalked this up as a win before competitive action began in 2022. But after the significant strides made by the Lions over the second half of the campaign, beating Detroit would be a tremendous achievement in the circumstances.
Carolina’s defense needs to make its presence felt against a Lions offense that is firing on all cylinders. Jared Goff is playing well and there are multiple weapons that could cause the Panthers untold problems if afforded enough space.
Detroit’s defense is also making notable strides after struggling early on. Much like the Steelers, they are likely to relish Carolina’s physical style and won’t be backing down an inch with Campbell at the helm.
The Panthers control their own destiny in terms of the NFC South championship. Win all three games left and they’ll host a postseason game, however unlikely that might be.
Momentum is everything at this stage of the season. Something the Lions possess in abundance and that’s why it’s so hard to see Carolina getting anything from their final home engagement.
With that in mind, predicting anything other than a Panthers’ loss based on their last game would be foolish. But that’s not to say Wilks cannot galvanize this unit and make the adjustments needed to end Detroit’s impressive run of recent results.
