What did current Carolina Panthers players think of Frank Reich’s first press conference since becoming their new head coach?

The excitement was palpable as Frank Reich took to the podium for his first press conference since becoming Carolina Panthers head coach. Many leading figures within the organization attended, which also included current players who wanted to cast their eye on what the future might hold.

Reich is no stranger to the Panthers having made Charlotte his home and quarterbacking the team during their inaugural campaign. Many of the roster from 1995 were also in attendance to lend support, which was in keeping with the traditions he brings to the role.

The new arrival made a point of shaking the hand of every Panthers player in attendance. Reich didn’t have to before speaking, but it was a strong statement and one that carries plenty of weight.

Carolina Panthers players liked what they heard from Frank Reich

Jeremy Chinn, Brady Christensen, Donte Jackson, Taylor Moton, Marquis Haynes Sr., Ikem Ekwonu, and Chuba Hubbard were the players that showed up. Not a bad turnout considering most scatter across the country once their football commitments conclude.

Jackson even went as far as to message Stephon Gilmore about Reich. The All-Pro cornerback worked with the coach after joining the Indianapolis Colts this offseason and gave a seal of approval to his former teammate on the appointment.

The LSU product, who could miss time in 2023 after tearing his Achilles, liked what he heard from Reich. Jackson outlined his leadership qualities and the belief he’ll evolve Carolina into a competitive outfit after years of underachievement with Matt Rhule at the helm.

"“He’s a very passionate football guy. You could tell that his team and his family means a lot to him. He gives you that sense of family, just a leader of men. You get that feel from him just from talking to him. You just get that feel that he’s all-in, that he’s about these players, and this organization. And winning and evolving.”"

Moton hasn’t had much to celebrate in terms of collective success since joining the Panthers as a second-round selection in 2017. This is despite the stud right tackle emerging as one of the league’s most consistent edge protectors and a team captain for good measure.

It’s evident Moton was fired up after hearing Reich’s plans. This is a good sign considering the influence he has within the locker room.

"“I’m fired up to get to play for him. He seems like an awesome dude, and an awesome coach. Knows what he’s talking about. Just excited to do whatever it takes to help him bring a championship here.”"

Much has been made about the Panthers overlooking Steve Wilks for the head coaching gig. He made the best of a difficult situation, restored respectability to Carolina football, and got the players all buying in when all hope seemed lost.

Even though this might make for an awkward situation when Reich enters the fray, Chinn didn’t anticipate it being much of an issue when the time comes to congregate for OTAs ahead of the new season.

This was the first step in what should hopefully become a profitable relationship between Reich and his players. The love for Wilks remains and nobody will ever forget the sterling job he did when Carolina was at its lowest, but this new era comes with significant potential and something that is sure to excite fans who’ve been starved of optimism for so long.

Getting this part of the proceedings out of the way was probably a relief for Reich. Now he can focus on molding a team capable of winning a weak-looking NFC South at the earliest possible opportunity.

And by the sounds of it, the players are fully on board.
