Bryce Young has given the Carolina Panthers plenty of reasons to believe his best football is still ahead.
Now, the fourth-year quarterback gets a chance to prove his early-season success can hold up against a defense capable of changing a game in a hurry.
The Panthers have a tough task against the Philadelphia Eagles, despite quarterback Jalen Hurts' absence. Fortunately, Young is in tremendous form, throwing for 1,268 passing yards, nine touchdowns and just two interceptions through four games.
Bryce Young cannot take the Eagles' defense lightly in Week 6
However, Philadelphia presents a different kind of challenge. Despite their offensive problems, their defense is still strong, led by a bona fide mastermind in Vic Fangio.
The Eagles have lost three straight games, but defensive tackle Jalen Carter showed how quickly the unit can create problems in a loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. The 2023 first-round pick out of Georgia recorded two strip sacks, giving him three sacks through five games, and the defense came up with two goal-line stands.
Carter is the obvious player Carolina will have to account for as it prepares for Philadelphia. The Eagles made him the NFL’s highest-paid defensive tackle this offseason, and his performance against Jacksonville showed why he can be so disruptive.
Young has played well enough to earn more attention. Beating an Eagles defense that can make game-changing plays would give him another opportunity to show that his start is more than a brief hot streak.
Bryce Young has an opportunity to cement his early-season surge
The Eagles defense led by Fangio's expertise has made timely plays. Even so, they have also allowed opposing offenses to find room, including 306 passing yards in the defeat to Jacksonville.
That gives Young a real opportunity.
Philadelphia’s recent results have put the defense under scrutiny, and the Panthers have moved the ball effectively, averaging 405.8 yards per game entering Week 6.
The matchup could also look different if Carolina gets more help at receiver.
Jalen Coker has missed time with a quadriceps injury, and his availability could affect the passing game. More reliable options on the outside would help Young punish Philadelphia if his offensive line gives him time to throw.
But underestimating Fangio would be extremely foolish.
The Eagles have enough talent up front to make this a meaningful test. Carter can wreck a drive with one play, and the Panthers cannot assume that their offensive momentum will carry over automatically after the bye.
Young’s first four games have changed the conversation around his development. A strong performance in Philadelphia would strengthen the case that he is taking a real step forward in his fourth season.
