The Carolina Panthers have had a difficult season on the injury front. And head coach Dave Canales will now be without another promising young player for the entire campaign.

The team confirmed that defensive lineman Cam Jackson has been placed on season-ending injured reserve with a shoulder injury that requires surgery. He's reportedly been dealing with it since training camp, and although the 2025 fifth-round pick tried to tough it out, it was too severe to overcome.

Jackson was rising into a core rotational presence. His work against the run was stout, which is more impressive considering he was playing at far less than 100 percent.

The Panthers gave him a chance to heal before seeing how things looked after the bye. But now, surgery is the chosen path.

It's disappointing for both the player and the Panthers. This also makes the imminent return of veteran defensive lineman Tershawn Wharton extremely well timed.

Wharton sustained a neck issue that required a procedure during the offseason, and the Panthers have been extremely cautious. He's now back at practice after having his 21-day return window opened, but being in shape and being in football shape are two very different things.

But with Jackson now out, Wharton needs to get involved sooner rather than later.

This isn't ideal, of course.

The Panthers have worked hard over the last couple of seasons to improve depth in the trenches. Jackson was a growing part of that, but he'll now be watching from the sidelines as the team looks to retain its NFC South championship.

Carolina Panthers have the mechanisms to cope without Cam Jackson

Jackson's focus has changed.

He's gone from helping on the rotation to facing a grueling rehabilitation period. The Panthers take pride in drafting and developing talent, but it will be Year 3 the next time anyone sees him on the field, so the situation gets murkier.

Carolina is equipped to cope without Jackson.

They are getting Wharton back, and the Florida product hasn't been healthy enough to feature in every game this season. That's understandable, but it also means defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero already has strategies in place to keep complications to a minimum.

Wharton's return will help, but he might need time to find his football legs again. Until then, the likes of Aaron Hall and Lee Hunter must continue their encouraging rookie progress, while TeRah Edwards may also be called upon more after underwhelming since the Panthers acquired him via trade from the Seattle Seahawks.

Jackson is a big body. He's very difficult to move off the block, and his ability to absorb double teams has made an impact that goes well beyond the stat sheet.

He wasn't a cornerstone piece, but the gap still needs to be filled effectively.

Because, as all fans know, trench warfare is the key to NFL success.
