The Carolina Panthers are looking to make a significant statement in their Week 1 opener against the Chicago Bears at Bank of America Stadium. Unfortunately, not everyone will suit up.
And for Ja'Tavion Sanders, the inactives list provided a reality check about where he truly stands in the pecking order.
This has always been a risk for Sanders. Carolina's tight end room is crowded, and not everyone will be active on game days. The former Texas standout will now watch from the sidelines, which further clouds his murky future with the club.

Sanders had so much promise when coming into the franchise. Everything hasn't quite gone according to plan, and general manager Dan Morgan wasn't going to wait around forever.
The team improved with the addition of Darren Waller, who's been brought along gradually since his arrival. However, he should play an important role once he fully gets up to speed.
The Panthers need all hands on deck. But when it comes to Sanders, trust seems to be waning.

Just what the future holds for Sanders remains to be seen. The Panthers are a draft-and-develop franchise that needs all the help they can get from a depth standpoint, but everyone has a cut-off point.
It seems Sanders is reaching it.
Speculation surrounds Sanders' future. Trade rumors have swirled in recent weeks, but the 2024 fourth-round pick is focusing on what he can control. Even so, being inactive proves just how far down the pecking order he is, and every ambitious player just wants to play.
But in this case, the Panthers may have seen enough.
Sanders doesn't offer much special-teams value. He's an athletic pass-catcher who has flashed some promise throughout his career, but the consistency is nowhere near the required standard. And with the Panthers looking to take the next step after winning the NFC South last season, there is no real room for passengers.
Player feelings don't really matter. The Panthers are in the business of winning football games, and they believe others give them a better chance to do that than Sanders right now.
And if the same trend continues leading into the trade deadline, getting something back in return might be the best course of action for Morgan and head coach Dave Canales.
That would be a sad end to Sanders' tenure in Carolina. But the outlook isn't looking especially optimistic after this latest setback.
