Someone needs to make way.

The Carolina Panthers are reportedly hoping to get prolific right tackle Taylor Moton back after their bye week. It's hard to put into words how important this will be.

Moton has been missing since earlier in the offseason when he was diagnosed with blood clots. The edge protector was placed on the physically unable to perform list and was taking blood thinners to rectify the issue. The Panthers haven't set a timeline for his return, but it seems he is getting much closer.

Obviously, nothing has been officially confirmed. But if reports of Moton's imminent return are accurate, the offensive line's dynamic will shift seismically.

Carolina Panthers have a tackle dilemma with Taylor Moton nearing his return

And not everyone will be happy.

First-round rookie Monroe Freeling has been filling in at right tackle with Moton out. He was drafted to be a potential long-term piece on the left-hand side, but the Panthers had to pivot. Now the Western Michigan product is gearing up to resume his place in the lineup, so the No. 19 pick could return to the blindside at Rasheed Walker's expense.

The free-agent signing has been up and down since the season began. Walker is experienced, but his contract is cheap enough to move him into a backup role if the Panthers have more confidence in Freeling.

And with Ikem Ekwonu still a way off from getting back, the Panthers have a big decision to make.

These are nice problems to have.

Moton is a franchise cornerstone and has been one since he was drafted. He is among the league's most underrated and consistent right tackles, and his growing leadership behind the scenes is something else the Panthers have depended upon heavily.

Carolina Panthers could shift Monroe Freeling to left tackle when Taylor Moton returns

Getting him back will give everyone a massive lift before the schedule gets tougher.

Moton might need a little time to get back to his best, but that should happen relatively quickly. And at a time when Carolina's offense is drawing huge plaudits, this longstanding team pillar's presence in the lineup will only make them better.

Freeling has promise, but he is nowhere near Moton's standard yet. Walker might be a short-term stopgap, so restoring the former Georgia standout to his typical left tackle responsibilities is best for the franchise's future.

That's the way I'd go.

Whether the Panthers agree is another matter.

Either way, Moton's return is huge. And if a couple more key men can get back after Carolina's bye, they'll be a difficult out for almost anybody.

The Panthers will closely monitor Moton's progress. They must have complete confidence in his recovery before adding him back to the active roster, but all signs point up.

This leaves the Panthers with a dilemma, but the more bodies they have available, the better their chances will be.

Even though that will mean a demotion for somebody else.
