After an underwhelming first game versus the Chicago Bears, the pressure was already building on Xavier Legette. But the Carolina Panthers never lost faith, and the wide receiver finally repaid it against the Atlanta Falcons.
Legette wasn't the second coming of Randy Moss during Carolina's dominant road triumph, but he didn't need to be. The Panthers have Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker to lead the charge. If the 2024 first-round pick becomes a complementary piece with downfield capabilities, that will be enough.
Despite more concentration issues in Week 1, the Panthers kept Legette involved. His 55-yard catch on a beautiful Bryce Young throw helped Carolina seize the initiative in Atlanta. He brought in another target, bringing his total to 64 receiving yards.

Not exactly elite numbers, but it was more than enough to make a lasting contribution alongside McMillan and Coker.
The locker room was buzzing for Legette afterward.
They know how hard he's been working to turn things around. They know how talented Legette can be when he puts everything together. And they also know how important he'll be as the season progrsses with rookie third-rounder Chris Brazzell II on season-ending injured reserve.
Week 1 didn't go Legette's way. But it only increased his resolve.
Of course, the Falcons aren't exactly world-beaters. Even so, for someone struggling to build any momentum, it meant a lot to Legette.
Head coach Dave Canales saw it coming, too.

Canales revealed that Legette's added urgency in practice throughout last week was a clear sign of his intent. And for once, the coach was thrilled to see it carry into a competitive regular-season environment.
"Xavier had the best week he's had of practice since I've been around (on) Wednesday. I mean, I think he hit three different balls down the field Bryce threw to him that were 40-plus yards, him running underneath at full speed, and it looked just like that. So something really cool for X to be able to build off of."
This is the statement Legette needed to make when hope seemed to be fading. At the same time, it's only one game, and a significant amount of hard work remains.
Sustained production was Legette's primary goal heading into the season, and that hasn't changed. This is Year 3 of his professional career. The same mistakes that blighted his first two seasons will not be tolerated as much moving forward.
But finally, after a longer wait than most fans expected, there is now light at the end of the tunnel.
Legette needed this. While it won't silence the critics, it's not a bad place to start.
And if this becomes a sign of things to come, Legette could turn Carolina's wide receiver room into a legitimate three-headed monster.
