Marty Hurney is ‘Doing an Outstanding Job’

Before you crucify me, let me first say that those aren’t the words I would have chosen. Okay, maybe I would have, but I would have taken out the “outstanding” and put in “nice” or something that doesn’t give the guy a swollen head. The statement is otherwise accurate though, at least when looking at the overall “big picture.”

This is an interesting story, albeit a short one. General Manager Marty Hurney’s contract is set to expire in June. And from what team president Danny Morrison says, it doesn’t sound like he’s ready to make a change of GM’s.

“I think he’s doing an outstanding job,” Morrison told the Charlotte Observer. “If you look at our track record since 2002, and our last four draft classes, having 26 of the 32 picks here…I think Marty Hurney’s excellent job speaks for itself.”

It’s also important to note, that of those 26 athletes remaining on the roster, many are performing in starting roles.

Morrison also said that ultimately, it will be team owner Jerry Richardson’s decision, not his, to decide the fate or future of John Fox, whose contract expires after the 2010 season, and Marty Hurney.

For now, Hurney has a job.
