Cam Newton has caused his fair share of worry for New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia…

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has never lost to the New England Patriots. Although the two teams do not meet often, Newton and the Panthers traveled to Foxborough this past season becoming one of only three teams to defeat New England.

Newton’s other victory came during 2013 inside Bank of America Stadium in front of a national audience as the Panthers won on Monday Night Football. In two career games versus New England, Newton is a combined 41-of-57 passing for 525 yards and six touchdowns, in addition to 106 rushing yards and another score.

Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia has been the coach slated with slowing down the Panthers franchise quarterback. His inability to do so was the source of a fun interview on opening media night as the Patriots prepare for their second consecutive Super Bowl appearance.

During an interview with Justin Rogers of The Detroit News, Patricia revealed both the motivation behind his bushy beard…

"“The quick story on the beard is, honestly, 2011 I believe it was, I have a lot of buddies who are in the military, that have gone overseas, were overseas that year,” Patricia said. “I got to see a couple of them before they left and the were usually in full beard, obviously doing great things to protect our country and just great Americans. It’s kind of just one of those deals where I said, ‘Well, I’m not shaving till you get back. So when you get to see us on TV, or see me on TV, know that I’m thinking about you,’”"

…and one of the causes for his few grey hairs beginning to make an appearance.

"“I name all the gray hairs,” Patricia joked. “I got (Carolina Panthers quarterback) Cam Newton in here somewhere.”"

Following the Super Bowl, Patricia is expected to become head coach of the Detroit Lions after reports surfaced he turned down the New York Giants who eventually hired Pat Shurmur. After two opportunities and no luck slowing Newton down, Patricia is undoubtedly familiar with both Newton and the Panthers.

And although he is leaving New England, Patricia won’t be getting away from Newton any time soon as the Panthers are scheduled to visit the Lions next season.
