REPORT: Panthers Norwell to sign with Jaguars
Carolina Panthers guard Andrew Norwell will reportedly be leaving via free agency…
The Carolina Panthers faced a difficult decision in regards to two linemen and their current contract situations. Speculation was that general manager Marty Hurney would have to make a decision between offensive guard Andrew Norwell and defensive tackle Star Lotulelei at some point this spring.
On March 14, the new NFL year begins and beginning at 4:00pm ET players who are free agents can begin to sign new contracts with other teams. As that deadline approaches many of the players who will be unrestricted free agents already know where they are going by virtue of the NFL allowing their agents contact with teams for a few days prior.
ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter is reporting that Norwell will become the highest paid guard in the league via a new deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars. At five-years for $66.5 million and $30 million guaranteed, the Panthers couldn’t compete and are now forced to let Norwell leave.

This creates a significant problem up front for Carolina, who is faced with replacing at least two starters over the next two seasons. Veteran center Ryan Kalil missed a majority of last year and has already announced his plans for retirement following the 2018 season.
Hurney now has to replace four starting players and should Lotulelei also leave, the number will rise again. Concerned with surrounding franchise quarterback Cam Newton with weapons to compete on offense, the focus must immediately shift to protecting him.
The Panthers made an attempt last season by signing left tackle Matt Kalil but he struggled at times during the year and could be a candidate for replacement in two more years. If so, the turnover up front from the unit responsible for protecting the quarterback will have seen three starters change during the prime of their quarterback’s career.
Carolina currently has eight picks in the draft and depending on their own signings through free agency, will need to make some quality selections. An offensive guard, cornerback, safety and potentially another running back or defensive lineman are all critical needed offseason additions.
