Carolina Panthers Week 5 preview and prediction vs. the New York Giants.

The Carolina Panthers have weathered multiple injuries and a suspension of veteran linebacker Thomas Davis over the first four weeks of a young NFL season. Davis misses his final game on Sunday, as the Panthers have enjoyed a successful season to this point.

Winning all but one game against divisional rival, Atlanta, the Panthers have displayed their tendency to maintain their momentum and success – especially when healthy. There have been a few bumps along the way as both the offense and defense continue to gel with new coordinators, but the results have been mostly positive.

As for the New York Giants, they too are experiencing some growing pains under new coach Pat Shurmur. Opening with a difficult schedule, the Giants have lost home games to Jacksonville and New Orleans, in addition to a road loss at Dallas and their only win over the Houston Texans.

There are a number of key matchups to consider when Carolina hosts the Giants on Sunday at Bank of America Stadium but one stands above the rest. Facing a veteran, Super Bowl winning quarterback in Eli Manning, who has a number of weapons at wide receiver – including Odell Beckham, the Panthers revamped secondary will be tested.

A few weeks ago Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan took advantage of the Panthers lack of pressure, picking apart the back end of the Carolina defense for 272 yards and two scores. Last time out, the Panthers forced four turnovers from the Bengals, but Andy Dalton still passed for over 300-yards and a couple of touchdowns.

Over the bye week, general manager Marty Hurney and the Panthers signed safety Eric Reid to a one-year contract. His contributions are expected to be immediate playing alongside veteran Mike Adams and hopefully strengthening the Carolina pass defense.

Combined with consistent pressure from the defensive line, the Panthers should take advantage of a Giants team struggling to find their identity under Shurmur. Carolina keeps their momentum after the bye, winning another and keeping pace in the NFC South.

PREDICTION: Carolina Panthers – 31, New York Giants – 24
