Carolina Panthers should part ways with veteran Mike Adams

It is time for the Panthers to go in a different direction.

There is no denying the impact Mike Adams has had for the Carolina Panthers, and his body of work speaks for itself. However, the 2018 season show that Adams should potentially think about hanging up the cleats as a member of the organization. He has expressed interest in playing next season, but the very least it should not be with the Carolina Panthers.

The Carolina Panthers already have many veterans on the defense side of the football. A mix of younger and older players would be beneficial for the team. Guys like Thomas Davis would fit well with the team still. However especially in the secondary, a player like Adams could be replaced. Even still, there is no denying the season he had statistically. He recorded three interceptions, his most since the 2015 campaign when he was with the Indianapolis Colts. The three interceptions bested his total from 2017 when he only had two.

Even still, there was no denying that Adams looked slow at times. With the National Football League trending more towards the direction of the passing game, that was certainly not a good sight to see. According to statistics from Pro Football Focus, Adams had a coverage rating of 45.3. Three times, he had a coverage rating of below 50. Against Tampa Bay in week eight, he had a mark of 41.8. Tampa Bay gave him trouble again in Week 13, as he recorded a rating of 45.3. In Week 16 against the Atlanta Falcons, his performance was abysmal. He tallied a mark of 30.1, as his coverage really struggled. He gave up only two catches, but with those catches came 49 yards and a touchdown.

There is no doubt that Adams has had a great career. His career highlights include two trips to the Pro Bowl in 2014 and 2015. I don’t want to make it seem like I am just saying to push him aside and get rid of him and never talk to him again. There is no denying the contributions he has made to the Panthers organization in the short time he has been here. The team just needs to get younger in the secondary. With Adams set to be a free agent, now would be the perfect time to part with him.

The Panthers have a slew of free agents and it will be interesting to see who stays and who goes. Given the direction the Panthers are trying to go with the secondary, as evident by the draft picks of Rashaan Gaulden and Donte Jackson, they can afford to cut Adams without major effects. Obviously, you never want to cut a player, but this is what would be best for the team.

Adams has had a great career and he should be able to continue it if he wants. I just don’t think that it should be with the Carolina Panthers moving forward.
