The Carolina Panthers are reportedly considering a shift in their defensive philosophy.

Three defensive coordinators in three years was the result of consistency from a Carolina Panthers defense proven to attack the quarterback. Two gentlemen moved from the coordinator position to head coach recently as Sean McDermott took over the Buffalo Bills two years ago and Steve Wilks landed an opportunity with the Arizona Cardinals last season.

The latter resulted in Eric Washington being promoted to take his place but after less than stellar results, coach Ron Rivera assumed the defensive play calling for the final five games of the season. A mixed bag of results followed but the Panthers did win a game and stymied an impressive New Orleans Saints offense down the stretch.

As Carolina prepares for 2019, expectations are Rivera will continue to make the defensive calls but according to a report from Joseph Person at The Athletic, even more changes could be in store for the Panthers.

Since taking over in 2011, Rivera’s defenses have operated in a 4-3 scheme with four down linemen and three linebackers as a base package. The roster personnel always included at least two solid tackles and ends who could stuff the run and pressure opposing quarterbacks.

At linebacker, the trio of Luke Kuechly, Thomas Davis and Shaq Thompson combined to form one of the most elite units in the league. While a shift may allow Carolina to generate increased pressure, as more and more NFL teams rely on the pass, general manager Marty Hurney needs to revamp the roster if this idea comes to fruition.

Up front, Carolina should be fine with their current linemen and the removal of a position would only add to the playing rotation, keeping fresh individuals on the field at all times. However, not re-signing Davis, leaves an opening at linebacker despite the emergence of rookies Jermaine Carter and Andre Smith.

While the Panthers may not officially commit to a 3-4 as their base package, it is likely to appear at times next season depending on game situations. If so, expect Hurney to add another linebacker either in free agency or the NFL Draft.

Doing so, coupled with an edge rusher, should leave the roster in good shape to execute either defensive scheme moving forward.
