Carolina Panthers: Life will not be easy in the NFC South
The NFC South got a whole lot better this offseason as every team got significant upgrades. The Carolina Panthers will once again see that life will not be easy in 2020.
With most of the offseason already in the books, the NFC South has quickly become the division to watch heading into the upcoming season. Almost every team either added a high profile free agent, had a fantastic draft class, or brought in a future Pro Football Hall of Famer quarterback ready to win another Super Bowl on a brand new team. At any rate, the Carolina Panthers might be on the outside looking in when it comes to their regular season hopes.
Early expectations show that the battle of who reigns supreme on top of the NFC South will likely come down between the New Orleans Saints and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If anything, the Panthers will likely be duking it out with the Atlanta Falcons to avoid being at the bottom of the barrel.
You know this feeling if you’re a fan of the Panthers, basically the worst team in the division with hopes of at least getting a top-ten pick to select a franchise player in the NFL Draft. Unfortunately for the Panthers last season, they ended the year in this exact situation at 5-11 with a lot of frustration and even more question marks. The most glaring issues last year focused on their lack of a consistent defense that could get the job done week in, week out. Luckily, at least the Panthers took note of this and made the right call in focusing on defense in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Don’t expect much out of the Carolina Panthers in 2020

The Panthers spent all seven of their draft picks on defensive players and should be better in this aspect during the regular season. Yes, there will be some growing pains, some adjustments that will need to be made, and a lot of miscommunication, but it’s Year 1 of a much-needed rebuild all across the board.
Fans can expect to see the Panthers be just a bit better in the grand scheme of things than what they saw last year. On paper, their offense will likely be a strength again and their defense should be slightly better as a whole if everything falls into place.
Regardless, life won’t be easy in the NFC South as the Panthers’ defense will still have to deal with potent offenses led by Drew Brees, Matt Ryan, and now Tom Brady in their division rival games. Even though their defense is a bit better this time around, it’s still going to be rather tough against these opposing offenses.
Hopefully, expectations are realistic in that the Panthers will likely only win just a few more games in 2020 than they did in 2019. Perhaps a six or seven-win season is in the cards as the Panthers continue to build the right way. All it takes is to start building the foundation now for a brighter future and hopefully, one that sees the main strength of this team be their defense. If it’s anything that the football world knows is that defense is what ultimately wins championships. Luckily, the Panthers are following this route that hopefully sees such results a few years from now.
