Carolina Panthers: Why Newton should backup Wilson in Seattle
By Dean Jones
Former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is reportedly willing to accept a backup role, and the Seattle Seahawks would be a good option.
Things are still up in the air regarding the future of Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. The player is looking for a new home after being released by the franchise this offseason at a strange time that left him with very little options to grab a starting job elsewhere.
After an initial report stated that Newton was prepared to wait for a firmer chance of going into another team as their No. 1 option. There is now a real belief that for 2015 NFL MVP would be willing to sit and become part of a roster as a backup.
This might not be the ideal situation for the player. But it certainly opens more doors in terms of finding employment immediately. Of all the options available to Newton, there is one interesting one that could potentially work for all parties.
ESPN’s NFL Insider Field Yates recently tweeted that Newton and the Seattle Seahawks might be a match made in heaven. This would put the quarterback behind No. 1 Russell Wilson on a team that has lofty ambitions in 2020.
Outlining his decision, Yates wrote.
"“If Cam is willing to go the Andy Dalton/Jameis Winston route, Seattle is a fit that intrigues me. Yes, Russell Wilson has never missed a game, but with only UDFA Anthony Gordon on the roster behind him, Cam would provide invaluable insurance if ever needed. He’s still a baller.”"
This particular scenario is definitely intriguing and would be a huge upgrade to what the Seahawks currently have. Much will depend on how much Newton is asking for, with Seattle currently boasting a little more than $16 million remaining.
