Carolina Panthers Pro Bowl possibility: Shaq Thompson – OLB

Now that Luke Kuechly has announced his retirement. The onus will be on outside linebacker Shaq Thompson to become the undisputed leader of the Carolina Panthers defense in 2020.

The former first-round pick out of Washington was given a four-year, $54.43 million contract extension with the Panthers that included a $16 million signing bonus and $27.52 million guaranteed after a standout start to his career.

Carolina’s defense did go through some difficulty in 2019. But Thomspon still played to a high level on his way to 109 combined tackles, 75 solo tackles, three sacks, and three pass deflections. He was a prominent feature in running downs, with backs getting to the second level consistently thanks to a disappointing campaign overall from their defensive line.

More will be needed from Thompson this time around. Besides middle linebacker Tahir Whitehead, this is a relatively inexperienced group and it will be up to him and others to guide rookie and unproven players through a period of transition.

There is every chance Thompson can thrive with this extra responsibility. And if he can perform to the level he is capable of, a Pro Bowl selection is not out of the realms of possibility.

Thompson will be one of the focal points for the Panthers’ defense next term. And defensive coordinator Phil Snow will be relying on him more than most to produce the goods.
