Best offseason moves for Carolina Panthers: Drafting Derrick Brown
It proved to be a historical NFL Draft from the Carolina Panthers. They allocated every pick on the defensive side of the ball. And this began by taking former Auburn defensive tackle Derrick Brown with the No. 7 overall selection.
The Panthers stuck to their guns despite Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons falling into their laps. This was down in no small part to the way Brown impressed Matt Rhule and others during the evaluation process.
Much will be expected of Brown from day one. But there is nothing to suggest he is not more than capable of making an instant impact. He is a formidable presence in the run game and has a rare ability to make others around him better.
This is due to the substantial attention he warrants on almost every down. But there are some slight questions regarding his ability to get after the quarterback at the next level.
Despite this, Brown’s future looks incredibly bright. He is a prospect with Pro Bowl potential and could become the defensive lynchpin that the Panthers need following the shock retirement of Luke Kuechly.
It will be up to Brown to prove he is worthy of the fully guaranteed deal given to him by Carolina’s decision-makers going forward. If he fires on all cylinders from the outset, then the Panthers will have struck gold with their first-rounder.
