Carolina Panthers trade target: Gus Edwards (RB)

It’s clear that something has to give with the Baltimore Ravens’ running attack. They have an embarrassment of riches at their disposal going into the season. But it is unlikely that they can keep everyone happy with the required amount of touches.

Quarterback Lamar Jackson and No. 1 option Mark Ingram will carry the load once again. And the Ravens made the surprise move to select J.K. Dobbins in the second round to further boost their options.

This was all the more surprising when one considers how well Gus Edwards performed last season. The backup was ultra-productive from his 113 carries on his way to 711 rushing yards, two touchdowns, and a yards-per-carry average of 5.3.

He did fumble the ball on two occasions. But Edwards also hauled in all seven targets thrown his way to develop his dual-threat ability.

However, the presence of Dobbins has cast further doubt in his long-term future with the franchise. The Carolina Panthers could use a more productive No. 2 running back option to take some of the pressure off All-Pro Christian McCaffrey. And Edwards definitely fits the bill.

They might have already found their primary backup in Reggie Bonnafon. But he is still unproven over a consistent period of time and it remains to be seen whether or not he can take a leap forward in 2020.

Edwards represents an instant upgrade on what Carolina currently has. And it would provide offensive coordinator Joe Brady with an exceptional one-two punch to call upon.
