Worst offseason moves by the Carolina Panthers: Not drafting a linebacker

The Carolina Panthers were dealt a significant blow when linebacker Luke Kuechly announced his retirement. This ended a sensational eight-year with the franchise. And just how much he is going to be missed on the field cannot be underestimated.

Although the perennial All-Pro returned to the fold as a pro scout. This will be no substitute for what Kuechly gave the defense on every down. The team did bring in Tahir Whitehead on a one-year deal. But there was a real chance to draft a long-term replacement that they did not end up doing.

This was a strong draft at the top-end regarding the inside linebacker spot. The likes of Patrick Queen would have been a real asset for the Panthers. But despite the organization allocating every pick on the defensive side of the ball, this did not include a dominant presence at the second level.

Jordan Mack and Chris Orr were picked up by the team during the frenzied undrafted free agency period. But it would be a huge shock if they ended up becoming Kuechly’s long-term replacement.

There is every chance Whitehead can produce good numbers. But his pass coverage is suspect and it remains to be seen whether he can do enough to earn a bigger commitment from the franchise.

If things do not pan out with the former Las Vegas Raider, the Panthers would undoubtedly try for a big name in free agency or use one of their first picks on the position next spring.
