Worst offseason moves by the Carolina Panthers: Timing of Cam Newton’s release
Cam Newton became an iconic figure from the moment he took the field for the Carolina Panthers. The dual-threat quarterback became not only the face of the franchise. But he was also one of the NFL’s most recognizable faces.
The signal-caller suffered serious shoulder and foot injuries over the last two seasons. And he was eventually released amid strange timing this offseason that has left him short of options if he wants to secure another starting job from the word go.
This decision became inevitable once the Panthers invested $63 million in getting Teddy Bridgewater in free agency. And it seems odd that Carolina’s decision-makers took so long to part ways with the 2015 NFL MVP.
In hindsight, the organization probably wishes they could go back and do it differently. And Newton definitely deserved better after all the dedication he put it during his time with the team.
What comes next for the player still remains unclear. He remains unsigned more than two months after his release. Although this might not be the case for too much longer with teams returning to their facilities.
Bridgewater now faces the unenviable task of filling Newton’s shoes. And although he is more than deserving of such an opportunity. There will always be comparisons between the two no matter how well the former New Orleans Saint does going forward.
