Tre Boston – Carolina Panthers S

Tre Boston was deserving of the three-year, $18 million deal given to him by the Carolina Panthers earlier this year. The safety made the most out of a second opportunity with the organization and was even named to Pro Football Focus’ All-Clutch team as a result of his outstanding contribution to a team that struggled overall.

Things haven’t been the same this time around.

Boston has looked like a shell of the player we saw last season.

He hasn’t been able to make the same sort of impression when the Panthers probably needed more from him after a host of departures before the campaign. If things don’t come together for the veteran in the coming weeks, then it might come with a lesser role or even his release next spring.

It doesn’t make any financial sense for Carolina to cut ties with Boston after this season. Parting ways with the former North Carolina standout would save them a little under $1 million on the salary cap in 2020, which is hardly worth the bother.

That being said, it would be prudent for the Panthers to start looking at younger alternatives for the long-term. There are plenty of exciting prospects entering the NFL Draft this year – which looks to be a deep class once again – so Boston has it all to do in order to leave the decision-makers in no doubt he is worth another shot in 2021.
