Carolina Panthers safety situation

Tre Boston and Juston Burris didn’t do enough to guarantee their places in the starting lineup in 2021. The safety tandem had some nice moments, of that there is little doubt. But a lack of consistency from the pair might result in some changes in this particular area of the field in the coming weeks.

It doesn’t make any sense to release Boston from a financial standpoint after he penned a three-year, $18 million extension last spring. However, the same cannot be said for Burris, and parting ways with the player ahead of time would also save the Carolina Panthers $3.8 million in cap space that could be better spent elsewhere.

Defensive coordinator Phil Snow is contemplating moving stud rookie Jeremy Chinn back into his preferred position of safety following a starring spell at outside linebacker in 2020. This would leave Carolina short at the second level, but the benefits of putting the former Southern Illinois star on the backend are there for all to see.

This is a critical few months ahead for the Panthers.

If they get the majority of their decisions right, it might see them enter the postseason discussion.

Patrick Peterson’s upcoming availability is a topic for discussion at the very least and one that could help, providing there is a willingness to switch positions in the twilight of his career.
