Stantley Thomas-Oliver – Carolina Panthers CB

It does appear surprising that the Carolina Panthers haven’t addressed their cornerback depth outside of signing Rashaan Melvin this offseason. Corn Elder is now on the Detroit Lions and Rasul Douglas is unlikely to be brought back after regressing down the stretch, so that leaves No. 1 option Donte Jackson and two unproven rookies in Troy Pride Jr. and Stantley Thomas-Oliver holding down the fort.

Pride Jr. was a major disappointment after a season of real struggles, which is not uncommon for corners but leaves the jury still out as to whether he can bounce back in the right way next time around. Thomas-Oliver was allowed to develop at his own pace and outside of getting schooled by Minnesota Vikings‘ stud wideout Justin Jefferson, it was a pleasing contribution from the player overall.

The former Florida International standout appeared in just seven percent of the team’s defensive snaps as a rookie. Thomas-Oliver showed enough to possibly indicate more involvement next time around, with his contribution to special teams another impactful factor that shouldn’t be overlooked.

He will continue to be a work in progress, which is exactly what the Panthers expected from a seventh-round pick who is still learning the ropes in coverage after transitioning from a wide receiver in college. Other options will come in between now and when competitive action begins once again, but Thomas-Oliver has put himself in a good spot for more reps in 2021.
