3 reasons the Panthers should call Bobby McCain immediately
By Dean Jones
Versatility
Getting players to the Carolina Panthers who can assist in multiple areas is something high on Matt Rhule’s list of priorities judging by his recruitment since joining the franchise from Baylor. Versatility is everything for the head coach and few would argue that Bobby McCain doesn’t fit the mold.
The defensive back can operate either as a cornerback or on the backend. Although he is more suited to the latter, there is nothing to suggest McCain cannot cover in the slot should there be a need for it.
Carolina’s cornerback room looks far stronger than the one that ended the 2019 campaign. Rasul Douglas and Corn Elder have been replaced with veteran free-agent A.J. Bouye and a potential shutdown corner in Jaycee Horn, who was selected No. 8 overall by the Panthers in the 2021 NFL Draft.
At least from the outside looking in, McCain is a tremendous fit on this defense.
Putting him alongside Jeremy Chinn would allow the former Southern Illinois standout more freedom to make a difference all over the field. This is something we saw plenty from the player during his rookie season at outside linebacker.
There should be plenty of interest in McCain from teams across the league. But that doesn’t mean Carolina shouldn’t throw their hat in the ring.
