Adding a different dimension

Jamie Newman may not even amount to a starting-caliber NFL quarterback, but it’s too soon to be writing someone with such impressive athletic attributes off just yet.

The Carolina Panthers got plenty of success with a player under center that could get things done on the ground when they selected Cam Newton No. 1 overall in 2011. Newman is never going to reach the level of the 2015 NFL MVP, but his potential arrival would bring a different dimension that could be utilized by offensive coordinator Joe Brady in a positive fashion.

Newman is a willing runner who is physical enough to mix it with linebackers in contact, which is something he’ll have to monitor a little closer against more imposing defenders at the next level.

Things have to come together quickly for Newman to see any meaningful time on the field next season.

That certainly wouldn’t be under center in a typical manner such as Trevor Lawrence or perhaps even Justin Fields, but if some creative packages can be devised to make the most out of his ability while he gets other areas of his game up to speed, it could be a nice option to call upon in the right fit.

Carolina has an abundance of talent on offense, so they might decide to look elsewhere for camp competition.

However, if they are looking for a player such as this in the immediate aftermath of Tommy Stevens’ release, then Newman is explosive enough to potentially make a difference if presented with an opportunity under Brady and alongside plenty of explosive individuals.
