5 Panthers players who could get cut without taking a snap in 2021

Rashaan Melvin – Carolina Panthers CB
The Carolina Panthers didn’t hang around when it came to boosting their options at cornerback this offseason. This unit became a real source of frustration despite Donte Jackson’s incredible series of performances to end the campaign, so surrounding the former LSU star with more in the way of quality was essential for their chances moving forward.
First-round pick Jaycee Horn and former Pro Bowler A.J. Bouye should help this area of the field considerably. There is also plenty of intrigue surrounding fifth-round pick Keith Taylor Jr., who could become a useful piece of the rotation if everything clicks into place right away.
Acquiring Rashaan Melvin is a relative unknown.
He’s found it difficult to find himself a permanent home since going undrafted in 2013. Melvin also opted out of the previous campaign as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars due to COVID-19 health concerns.
Carolina has one of the league’s youngest rosters and Melvin would be an elder statesman if he makes the 53-man roster. Just how much he’s been working on his game away from the gridiron will ultimately determine what – if any – role he’ll play in 2021.
The Panthers have shown plenty of belief in young players who lack experience since Matt Rhule took over at the helm. If they decide to continue this trend, then it might see Melvin’s time with the organization end quicker than expected.
