David DeCastro’s reported ankle problem

There is a big question that needs to be answered by the Carolina Panthers or any other team looking to sign David DeCastro. According to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, the player is reportedly dealing with an ankle problem and is “evaluating his future” after the Pittsburgh Steelers opted to cut him loose.

This is a problem, obviously.

Carolina has been stung by veteran offensive linemen in the past who cannot stay on the field for one injury reason or another. They’d have to be absolutely sure DeCastro was not only fit enough to produce the goods – but that he truly wants to carry on playing.

The Panthers will be fully aware of these reports and act accordingly. There are some obvious benefits to slotting DeCastro on their offensive line in 2021. But there’s absolutely no point acquiring him if things take a sour turn on the injury front.

It’s a simple case of risk versus reward.

And there is a chance DeCastro spurns every offer coming his way and hangs up his cleats.

If the Panthers opt to pursue DeCastro, they’ll need to work fast.

Teams in a better position to contend next season will be casting their eye on the player in the hope he can get them over the hump and to the promised land. Therefore, striking while the iron is hot is key.
