Carolina Panthers must transfer roster management decision making to Scott Fitterer

Currently, Matt Rhule has the final say when it comes to shaping the Carolina Panthers roster alongside general manager Scott Fritterer. This is tremendous power for a head coach in today’s NFL.

Head coaches generally must earn this right through years of experience and winning football games over a consistent period of time. Bill Belichick, Sean Payton, and Pete Carroll are prime examples of this.

The downside for a head coach is how easy it is to mix personal and professional emotions, the lack of wisdom, and not being able to focus on the team. It is quite noticeable there is a gluttony of former Temple and Baylor players on the roster – some well-deserved, but others are head-scratchers.

Rhule tends to stick in his comfort zone by surrounding himself with those he is familiar with and not necessarily the best athletes for the team. That is not the best way to build a true contender at the next level and something he’s finding out the hard way.

Roster decisions should revert solely to Fitterer, who has two decades of personnel experience with the Seattle Seahawks prior to his arrival in Carolina and played a leading role in the organization’s rise to prominence and eventual Super Bowl triumph.
