Carolina Panthers OL coach

  • Doug Marrone (University of Alabama)

Adding more NFL experience to the Carolina Panthers coaching staff would be the smart way to go for Matt Rhule. Although just how many with high credentials would take the plunge is another matter entirely.

Pat Meyer had one hand tied behind his back in terms of personnel across the offensive line. But given how the unit struggled to do the simple things constantly, it left the Panthers and Rhule with no other choice other than to go with a fresh set of ideas.

One name that instantly comes to mind as a Meyer replacement would be Doug Marrone, a former head coach who is currently working with offensive linemen at the University of Alabama.

This ticks a lot of boxes where Carolina is concerned. Marrone is vastly experienced, has an exceptional track record, and knows what it takes to build a successful protection scheme at the next level.

While Marrone’s time as head coach of the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars didn’t go quite according to plan, that does not detract from what a tremendous addition he’d be to Carolina’s coaching staff.

However, there is a chance Rhule might be personally threatened by having a potential interim head coach such as Marrone on the staff if things go south once again in 2022.
