Another season where Christian McCaffrey suffered some troubling injury problems was not what the Carolina Panthers were hoping for. It didn’t take long for things to completely capitulate without the All-Pro and unless the staff finds a better way to cope without the former first-round pick, the same complications could emerge next time around.

There has been some speculation that McCaffrey might be traded this offseason. Scott Fitterer said he would take calls, but that doesn’t mean the Panthers are looking to move on from one of the league’s best weapons when healthy.

Finding another option to share the burden would be something to consider for Carolina this offseason. Chuba Hubbard and Ameer Abdullah flashed at times in McCaffrey’s absence, but asking either to be a lead back might be unrealistic.

Someone Fitterer is very familiar with is due to become a free agent this spring. Rashaad Penny might not have lived up to his first-round billing since entering the league, but he demonstrated some real progress in 2021 and if the price is right, the Panthers should make an inquiry.

Penny gained 749 rushing yards and six touchdowns with a 6.3 yards-per-carry average this season from just 10 games. His skill set seems to compliment McCaffrey’s and providing he isn’t tagged, could be a shrewd bit of business by Fitterer.
