5 worst contracts on the Carolina Panthers in 2022
By Dean Jones
Robby Anderson – Carolina Panthers WR
- $16.83 million in 2022
After a fantastic first season with the Carolina Panthers, Robby Anderson was rewarded with a two-year contract extension that was a supreme vote of confidence from the franchise. The wide receiver enjoyed a career campaign opposite D.J. Moore despite some inconsistent production under center, so hopes were high that his previous relationship with Sam Darnold on the New York Jets would propel him to even greater heights in 2021.
Sadly, this did not come to fruition. Anderson mustered just 53 receptions from 110 targets, leading to 519 receiving yards and five touchdowns. He did not eclipse the 100-yard mark during the entire campaign.
Anderson was clearly frustrated with Darnold’s decision-making. That was obvious from his outbursts on the sidelines and although he threatened to show signs of life with Cam Newton under center, it never really materialized.
The Temple product will count $16.83 million against the cap next season and $15.83 million in 2023. Anderson should still be around for the next campaign, but he’ll need to turn things around drastically or be a cut candidate with a saving of $12 million.
There is no denying Anderson has the talent. But unlike D.J. Moore, he clearly finds life difficult generating big-time numbers without a consistent presence distributing the football.
