Morgan Fox – Carolina Panthers DL

  • Cap saving – $3.06 million

Things started really well for Morgan Fox following his free-agent switch from the Los Angeles Rams. The versatile defensive lineman proved highly useful against the run and when it came to generating pressure, but this outstanding start tailed off down the stretch and could mean he is another potential tough-cut candidate by the Carolina Panthers ahead of free agency.

Fox would feel extremely aggrieved if this scenario comes to fruition. But the Panthers do have Yetur Gross-Matos to fill in as a three-technique in this eventuality and the saving of $3 million could allow the primary decision-makers to bring in a veteran offensive lineman capable of making an immediate impact on the team’s fortunes.

Much will also depend on what happens with DaQuan Jones in free agency. The veteran made a big impression alongside Derrick Brown and might be worth bringing back if the money is right, which would allow the likes of Bravvion Roy and Daviyon Nixon to continue their development in a rotational role.

If Haason Reddick doesn’t come back, then releasing Fox ahead of time could be hard to justify. But it’s still something those in power will consider after the player gained just 1.5 sacks and earned a modest 55.2 grade from Pro Football Focus as a result of his efforts.

Fox is a likable guy who fitted in well within the Panthers’ locker room. However, there is no room for sentiment when it comes to building a roster capable of challenging in 2022.
