It’s something of a surprise that the Carolina Panthers have shown little interest in Carson Strong throughout the evaluation process. The former Nevada standout is one of the real enigmas from this year’s quarterback class and there is a lot for an NFL team to work with providing the signal-caller is allowed time to develop behind a seasoned veteran.
Strong has three seasons of outstanding production at the college level, even though the standard of competition isn’t classed as all that high compared to the SEC or another well-established conference. However, we’ve seen prospects from less-heralded programs go on to become elite players at the next level, which ensures someone should to take a chance on him late in the first round or relatively early on Day 2.
One thing Strong does possess is an elite NFL arm. He can make all the throws almost effortlessly and this is enhanced when the player gets plenty of time in the pocket to make the right choice.
This is matched by impressive touch on his short-to-intermediate throws. Strong’s decision-making is done quickly and with conviction – something that will aid his transition to the professional ranks.
Risk-taking is something Strong needs to cut down on. The things he got away with in college will not fly in the NFL and a lack of mobility is another potential flaw that could hinder his chances.
Strong would be a work in progress for the Carolina Panthers. But of all the prospects on this list, he appears one of the more unlikely.
