General manager Scott Fitterer has always stated that until the Carolina Panthers find the right guy under center, they will keep swinging. But if another trade goes wrong some serious questions will be asked about the current regime and their failure to properly evaluate quarterback talent.

Hopefully, Baker Mayfield can shine and Fitterer clearly likes the player’s overall demeanor. There is a swagger and confidence to his play that Sam Darnold doesn’t possess and this trade gives Carolina an opportunity to win now while third-round pick Matt Corral develops.

If Mayfield doesn’t work out, then it’s unlikely the Panthers will make any sort of genuine progression in 2022. This would leave Matt Rhule’s job status in significant doubt and might be the final straw for team owner David Tepper.

Tepper shelled out mega money to tempt Rhule from the college ranks and stuck with his choice earlier this year despite Carolina losing 12 of their final 14 games. Allowing the head coach to make another veteran trade is proof of this faith, even if there are concerns surrounding how much Mayfield can actually move the needle.

Things are hanging by a knife-edge in Carolina right now. The fanbase is extremely restless and it’s not outlandish to suggest that Rhule has bet his job on Mayfield next season.
